Seven Small-World Play Ideas with Animal Figures
Simple, screen-free prompts that turn animal characters and household objects into an imaginative world.

Small-world play gives children a manageable stage on which to invent places, relationships and problems. The setup can be wonderfully simple: a few figures, a cloth, some blocks and an invitation to imagine.
Seven adventures to begin
Offer one prompt and let the child decide what happens next. The best small worlds remain open enough to change direction.
- Build a farmyard rescue from blocks and paper
- Create animal footprints in play dough
- Make a watering hole from a shallow blue tray
- Sort characters by habitat, colour or personality
- Invent a bridge every animal can cross
- Tell a three-part lost-and-found story
- Create a night-time world with paper stars
Questions that keep stories moving
Try questions such as: Who lives here? What changed today? How could the friends help? What should happen next? These prompts support vocabulary, sequencing and flexible problem-solving.
Make room for repetition
Children often replay the same scene many times. Repetition lets them test different outcomes, practise language and build confidence.
